Hi all! I ran across some good sounding bird recipes. I'm going to try the birdie bread first. My guys already like cornbread, so it should be a hit. www.cockatiels.org/Look under where it says NCS Library for 'recipes' Bev

Bev, I looked at the recipes and I do make all kinds using baby food [just bought 'banana's & berries' and 'green beans, corn & rice ] I use wheat flour, oatmeal, corn meal, and add whatever I feel like throwing in. I use corn syrup or honey and water to make a gooie mix and bake on cookie sheet, and cut-up in piecies to fit in food cups. Now the question - Is milk in this recipe good for birds? Alice

Bev, I put this site in Favorites, with about 100 others. Looks like it has a lot of interesting info. etc. Maybe we should ask the experts about using milk, grated cheese, or skim ricotta cheese. Maybe useing some in moderation is OK. What do you think? Alice
Except for the seed or pellets, some sound good enough for us to eat. LOL
'Lost' will be coming on now, so see you latter or tomorrow.

Hmmmm......that's a good question. I've always given my guys a leftover biscuit or piece of crumbled cornbread. They're made with buttermilk. I'm not going to worry about biscuits and cornbread because I've had such good luck with them. But you're right about dairy products not being good for them. I don't know about the cheese in those recipes. Maybe birdvet will know You know, while I'm typing this I remember reading somewhere that bread soaked in milk was good for brooding birds and feeding to babies. Some of my books are old, so it may be outdated info. They also say to give them grit, but we know better now. That's definitely outdated!

Parrots in general, do not digest lactose, but they are NOT lactose-intolerent. This means that, although dairy should be minimized in their diet, it is fine for them to get some. For example, many birds love cheese for some reason, so a small amount can be melted ON some other food you are trying to get them to eat (such as veggies, pasta, etc)

OK, now we know that a 'little' once in awhile to get them to eat something new, or if there some in a biscuit is OK for a treat. Thanks BV Alice

salt is bad for birds right?(but every living creature needs salt so they could eat a tiny bit right?) cheese has lots of salt(i think)
