Hi Sheila,
Don't keep her in a closet but just try to increase her hours of darkness by covering her cage and perhaps removing her from the room she's normally in. Aim for 12 hours of darkness and see what happens. It's hard.
My chronic egg layer, who managed to stay hearty and robust despite it all, didn't really stop until we gave her a new cage. It happened to be much larger but that was just coincidental. We had tried by switching cages before, but to no avail. When they are determined, they are determned.
Also, as was suggested above, keep away from mushy foods!

I'm curious what mushy foods will do, when they're in the egg laying mood?

Hi,
From what I understand they use mushy foods to feed their young and so by feeding them to the hen egglaying will be encouraged. A more knowledgeable answer is needed -- yo, Kerry!
