hello, I live overseas, and recently was given a young grey parrot who they say is 3 months, but there is no documentation, she looks pretty big and her eyes are a dark grey. When I received her, she was being fed 3 times a day with water and some ground sees, her poops were yellow green and watery. Since I got her, I started feeding her a mash of fruits and vegs with rice, also I am still handfeeding her with a mix of oatmeal, cerelac(baby cereal with soy). I also give her a variety of seeds and nuts. she appears to be healthy her poops have become green and with a small amount of white, and they are firm. Is there anything you can reccomend that I can add to her hand feeding formula, since I can't get any packaged stuff here? Also she likes to sleep on my chest, is this normal? How much should young greys sleep during the day? Any other advice you can give me would be much appreciated.
thanks

Hi,
Thanks for writing. I am afraid that I don't know anything about African Greys nor even about breeding/feeding baby birds. I was hoping that someone more qualified would respond to you but see that no one has. This is a very quiet board and the regulars tend to have budgies and cockatiels and I believe a Pacific parotlette.
I am certain that there is an African Grey society site online and encourage you to ask them your questions. Absent that, I would suggest an avian vet to mentor you. Have you had a young bird before?
Please keep checking back. This is a three or four day holiday weekend in the U.S. and it's possible that you will be receiving a reply here early in the week. Please let us know the suggestions given you.
Regards, Sivin

With all the science/research that has been put into making hand feeding formulas I don't know anyone who does it from scratch any longer. Using (human) baby cereal one has to be sure not to use the iron fortified stuff, it's toxic to the birds. Most places will ship orders anywhere in the world. www.kaytee.com/companion_animals/birds/hand_feeding/
