One of my parakeets got his foot trapped in a thread on the curtains last night, and I didn't discover him for several hours. I freed him with difficulty and put him in a small cage with a low perch. His foot doesn't appear to be broken because he still uses it a little, but it is a little red, has some bloody scrapes on it, and it looks like he chewed the end of his longest toe off trying to free himself - it is now slightly shorter than the other one and all mangled-looking. I felt awful for not discovering him sooner, and can't get him to a vet until tomorrow morning. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime to realieve his pain and prevent infection? He seems surprisingly well - he's eating, and perching on his good foot.

Hmmm. I posted a link for you earlier, but it doesn't seem to have been entered. Well, it's probably not useful. That was for a more mangled/broken foot, and fortunately your budgie's doesn't sound that bad. This looks almost the same, the broken bone sectionn: www.petcaretips.net/bird-first-aid.htmlProbably not necessary. I hope he heals well..

Thanks Michael for the link, and sorry for not acknowledging your reply before now. Binky seems to be doing fine; I got some cream from the vet which I have to apply twice a day, which is...challenging, trying to make this wriggly, bitey little scrap hold still, but I'm managing thanks again

I'm glad he's doing well. Good luck with medicating the budgie; that can sure be a challenge.
