We have a discount store called ‘Ocean State Job Lot’ that has some real good bargains. This week they had all kinds of bird-rabbit-etc. food on sale for $2. ‘4 or 5 pound bags.’ We bought some different kinds of bird seed for the outside bird feeders because most of the wild bird seed contains a lot of corn that they knockout for the rodents we don’t want. They are all ‘Hartz’ and reading on the back of the ‘Bonanza Parakeet Gourmet Diet with veg.-fruit- etc.’ On the back in small print says ‘Peanut Warning – May contain Peanuts or Peanut Dust’ So, if anyone is allergic to peanuts in the house, please read all ingredients in your pet food. I’m now listening to all the recalls on cat and dog food. What next? I put some seed in a dish to see if it sprouts before I use it. The bird seed I use went up $2. but they eat fresh food I make, and the wild bird food seed doubled in price?? Alice

Alice if the seed doesn't sprout, does it mean it's bad? I never thought about sprouting it before feeding it to my birds.
I bought some Kaytee Egg-cited bird seed yesterday. It's suppose to be egg-enriched/fortified food. If it is, as stated, I'm hoping it'll be better for Rose since she's in the egg laying mood!!! This seed is a little more expensive.

Sheila, we bought the seeds to add to the seed for the outside bird feeders, but wanted to make sure it was good, so that's why I'm trying to sprout it. I don't want to give stale seed to them.
The seed I buy for our birds have experation dates on them, these didn't. The rabbit food bags [$2.] too were the same kind my daughter gets and pays almost $10. for. We went back and bought the last 6 bags for her. It's a close out store that buys stuff because the packaging is changed by the co. etc. They were almost sold out of all dry pet food!
I tried sprouting seeds for the greens for our birds to eat on a paper towel a few times, but it always got yucky! So, this time I put these in a plastic see through bowl with a cover and put tiny holes in the bottom and top and put it in a dish with water. Now I could just pick up the bowl, let the water drain out and put fresh water in dish every other day. Sounds cleaner to me and no mold. Soo, maybe I'll try this with their seed and see if they'll eat some, and have fresh greens all the time. Will let you know how it works out ?? Alice
