Hi! If you have time please help! My dad has a 5 year old lovebird. All of this time we figured Rudy was a male. He would act certain ways at certain times of the year that also made it appear so. About two weeks ago he started tearing up his papers and building a nest. I know some male birds build the nest so we figured this was normal. Except for sitting on the nest he seemed the same. Him and Dad have a morning routine, it has been the same for years. Today he did not come out of his cage, he does not want to be touched and mom said he would fluff up, hold his wings crooked and act like he was trying to poop, but he hasnt pooped all day. He has an appointment monday, but today is friday and dad is sooo worried! Even if he could afford it there are no emergency vets around here that do birds! We are afraid that he is female and is trying to lay eggs but cant. Please get back to me if you can! Thanks

Hi! It has been a long wekend! Believe it or not we found a fairly local avian vet on saturday morning. Dad took "ruby" in and the doc worked on her for a while and saied she is overdue to start laying to start with and the egg was overly large. He gave dad some lubricant to apply and said if she did not have it by monday , bring her back. Well, she started acting a little better on sunday so dad decided to stick with his vet. The other vet had said he might have to break the egg to get it out(which can poison the bird). His vet spent almost an hour on "ruby" today. He got the egg out-whole. He had to cut her a little so there is still a chance of infection, but she laid in dads hand all the way home eating up the attention, and when she got home she went straight for her food! I think dad has a mighty tuff little girl there! Thanks for your help and care, its nice to have a place like this to talk to other poor souls who are completely owned by their birds!

Wow, what an ordeal. I didn't know they could hold in an egg so long, -I figured there are others in line. What a fortunate birdy to get such good care. I hope she heals up well, so that you all continue to enjoy each other.

Great new's from me too. I'm glad that your Dad took Rudy to his vet and didn't wait till Mon. Poor baby, but it's over and I'm glad Rudy is eating, what a relief. Opps I mean Ruby. Our Sonny turned out to be a Sunny too. Keep in touch on how she's doing. Many on the board don't post much, but they read a lot, so maybe your information will help someone else. Alice

Hey Everybody! First I want to say thanks for everyones thoughtfulness!! Sorry it took me so long to get back. I have bad news . Rudy(Ruby) died yesterday at about 4:30. Dad works close to home and got to see her at lunch, he said she was laying her head in his hand, which to him is how she hugged him. He thinks she was telling him goodbye . He called me and told me he had just lost his best friend. It broke his heart, and mine. It would kill me if I lost one of mine. Rudy was the first bird in the family and she will be very missed! I just wanted to say thanks and give an update. Oh, one more thing, there is this guy my dad works with and he is the biggest "jerk" on the earth, I wont go into detail because what he said was horrible!! Dad went to work today, and of course he looked bad and felt terrible well, he was dumb enough to tell this guy what was bothering him. I can not put on here what he said but just say he was definately making fun of dads grief over a bird! Some people are just awful, my mother likes birds better than she likes people, wonder why? Anyway, enough blabber, see ya!

Sorry about Ruby and sorry about your Dad's jerky associate. I think we can all relate to whatever stupid thing he said.

I'm so sorry to hear the passing of Rudy . Tell your Dad, I can feel his pain, and for him to just consider the source, of a jerk! he works with. The guy at your Dad's work doesn't have any compassion, or love for any living creature, whether it is human or animal! Tell your Dad we care and have lots of shoulders he can cry on! We've all been there! Sometimes more than once! Someday the jerk will get his, and hopefully he'll learn some kindness!

I'm also very sorry about your loss of Rudy. I missed seeing this post for a while. It sounded like it would be a happy ending. I'm glad your family had such a loving pet and happy memories.

Soo sorry to hear about Rudy, that was her name for many yrs. and will be remembered as a well loved pet. Also sorry for that person at your fathers work that was so unkind or caring. He must be a lonely person-not loved-be loved- sad. You can come here any time for advice-sound off-etc. We are all animal lovers, be a bird-dog-cat-etc. Take care, Alice
