My 1 ½ yr male parakeet is a delight! I raised him from a chick. He can speak 4 languages & seems to even know what some of the words mean. He has free flying privileges in our 4 room apartment, but likes my room the best. It seems to be his territory. He designates imaginary Mrs Birds around the apt (usually black things) & feeds them continually. Recently, he seems to be vying with me for the place of boss. Is this possible? When he is frightened, he flies immediately to me, & he also comes to receive affection, spending lots of time on my shoulder or hand. Thankfully, he is respectful to others. It is only his occasional bursts of dominance that are a problem. Often he attacks when I am working at something & not noticing him, but if I look at him when he is intent with a Mrs Bird, he flies at me! At these times, he happily attacks me from all angles. He hunts for skin and bites hard, and keeps at it! I usually try to get him in his cage & cover it for some quiet time, but it is not easy to get him in when he is darting around. We want him to enjoy life, and we want to enjoy him! Does anyone have any advice for us?

Hi SP and welcome to the forum. Your budgie does sound delightful. I'm not the budgie expert but would suggest that for starters you keep him off your shoulder (and head, if he goes there as well). For a bird, the higher perch is the dominent one.
Can someone else help SP?
Regards, Sivin

Wecome to the board SP
Gee, I wish I could help, but he sure sounds like a 'happy bird' except for the attacking! ouch!
Having 4 female keets for about 3 to 4 yrs. that are free flighted, all have different personalities. And a pair f/m for about a yr. I really don't know what to say except maybe remove the the dark things and don't wear dark shirts?
Or what Sivin said. Anybody else out there? Alice
