This is a cross post from another board. Sound GREAT I'm going to try it once I run out of left overs!
Crock Pot Roast
If you don't have a large slow cooker, just cut the recipe in half and it works fine.
5-6 lbs round roast 1 lbs carrots peeled and cut 3 med onions chopped 6 cloves garlic chopped 2 cups chicken stock 1 cup beef stock 1 cup dry red wine 1- 28 oz can crushed tomatoes 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 bay leaves salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and thyme to taste
In a skillet, heat olive oil till almost smoking. Brown meat on all sides. In slow cooker, add vegetable, garlic and seasonings. Place browned meat in slow cooker and add liquids. Cover and cook (high- 6-7 hours or low 9 -10 hours). Remove meat and place on plate, tent with foil for 15 minutes. Remove bay leaves and discard. For gravy, puree in blender juices and vegetables left in slow cooker- no need to add thickener. After 15 minutes ... serve...

This sounds 'GOOD' Do you have the slow-cooker that they sell at Wal-mart that you remove the pan from inside the unit? My daughter has both the small & big one. They are easy to clean, and she puts it out on the porch in the summer so it doesn't heat up the house. She's been buying the 'crock-pot starters' that you find in the frozen section, but they have a lot of gravy, so she adds more meat, frozen veg. etc. She's been putting one on Fri. nights [because she works Sat.] This drives her Hub crazy smelling the food cooking all nite, but at least she knows he & the kids will eat good while she's at work, and hopes for left-overs. LOL Alice I only have the small 6qt. electric ones because I always slow cooked on the wood stove on gas grates that came from gas stoves. [The whole house smelled good when I did a smoked shoulder with carrots & potatoes in a large roasting pan.]

Oh yes one MUST have at lease 1 crockpot if they prepare food for a bird club! (Have Crockpot, will travel ) Not all places that one has shows at have kitchens, Crockpots are the only way to serve hot foods. Some of our way members well cook over night in their hotel rooms for the big lunch. I have 3 now. I asked for a large round one for Christmas. My old one is developing a crack around the bottom. Wouldn't want it to finally go without a back up. The big round Crockpot's are GREAT for heating up round tortillas for tacos on the go.

So, you're the thingypot lady, in addition to the bird lady. I wonder if the crack is from heating the pot without being filled with liquid to distribute the heat? As long as it lasts for years, it's OK to give out eventually.

....BLUSH... OH MY!!! did I make a type O? ? Went back and fixed my original post.... I am thinking that is the reason it cracked. I put a very wet dish towel in the bottom to creat steam, but am thinking I need to add more water. The crack hasn't gone all the way through and I am going to be more careful in the future.

If you want steam heat, how about a rice cooker? Set on the low "keep" setting, I wonder if that could be used to keep stew type dishes hot also? (They usually heat to boiling/steaming hot, then when the thermostat goes up because the water's boiled off, and the rice is done, it switches down to the cooler "keep" temperature, which you can manually set it to also.) Nowadays I'd think they'd have metal pots that you can program or set to different temperatures.
