A few years ago I heard that new carpeting is toxic to birds. We are now in a situation of looking for a new place to live and several ads feature new carpeting. Does anyone know how long new carpeting must air out to be safe? Thanks.

Sivin, They only thing I could suggest is to have it cleaned with a non-toxic product and let it air dry, windows opened and a fan or two on. I think all carpeting have toxic fumes of some kind, even if they say no. The only carpeting low in fumes is wool, but I don't think I would like it, 'moths-bugs ??' A steam-vac rug machine is a good investment, cheaper than renting one or having someone come in to do it, and you can use it when needed. Saves $$ in the long run. Kerry had new carpeting installed maybe 2 yrs. ago. Maybe she could give you some better info. Alice

Hi Alice,
Thanks for your comments. It occurred to me last night that even if they say "new carpeting" it could very well have been installed six months ago. This will be in a rental house or apartment so I won't have any say in the matter.
