this morning i woke up at about 4 am to the horrible sound of wings flapping rapidly against metal bars (i know all of u must have experienced that sound, it hurts). ive trained myself to get up and turn the lights on sub-consciencely. they stop immediately, i talk to them softly for a few minutes, and go back to sleep. but this morning was different; what felt like 10 minutes later, they're flapping again. so i o the same thing but talk to them a little longer and leave the closet light on for them. they stopped after that, but i always wonder what causes these sudden outbursts? i remember someone posting something about this subject a few years ago, but i dont remember what the replies were.. please help, i need my sleep... and this was the morning of the TAKS (texas assessment of knowledge and skills) writing test! could they have sensed my stress? though i was sleeping..

Hi Claire,
It seems to me that any alteration in the room can set off these frights. This could be caused by the lights from a passing car dancing on the curtains to a bush brushing against a nearby window. A few weeks ago our pup banged into one of the cages, setting off Casey, whose hysteria then awakened Sydney, who in turn disturbed Nikki. (Casey and Syd are cockatiels in separate cages next to each other, and Nikki is an English budgie kept in a cage across the room.)
These things just seem to happen. If you can sleep with a night light on that might help the problem a bit. I've heard that cockatiels are especially prone to thise frights.
Hope you assessed well, anyway!

Cars, dogs, and (on the 3rd floor, no bushes) bushes dont bother them at all. my dog barks all the time and they dont seem to be bothered at all by it. and its houston, they're used to cars, this happens to rarely for it to be a car. maybe a pillow fell off my bed or something?? thumb-tac fell off of one of my posters?? hm, good chance it could be the pillow one..well thanx!

We only had 1 night fright episode when we first got our budgies. I use to cover them when we first got them, but reading- reading- I've learned a lot on this board etc. To make a long story short ' it was a commom house fly in their cage ' We have a battery back-up night light incase the power goes out. Also a small lamp & radio on a timer incase we come home late. And only cover the cages top & sides. Could there have been a strange noise in the house? someone flush a toilet or someone beep a horn outside? I've had a picture fall off the wall at night. Just some thoughts. Alice
